Here are our top picks for upcoming events and activities near Llandovery.
The Royal Welsh Show: A National Spectacle
Dates: 20th – 23rd July 2026
Location: Royal Welsh Showground, Llanelwedd, LD2 3SY
Distance from SA20 0RU: 20 miles (Approx. 35-minute drive)
Often described as the pinnacle of the British agricultural calendar, the Royal Welsh Show is an unmissable four-day event. While it is famous for its livestock competitions featuring the finest cattle and sheep in the UK, the show offers far more than farming. Visitors can enjoy exhilarating displays in the main ring, including stunt riders and military bands, as well as a massive forestry section and a dedicated sporting area. It is a true celebration of Welsh culture and rural life.
The Brecon County Show
Date: Saturday, 1st August 2026
Location: The Showground, Brecon, LD3 7PL
Distance from SA20 0RU: 21 miles (Approx. 35-minute drive)
For a more local but equally prestigious experience, the Brecon County Show is a highlight of the summer. As the oldest agricultural society in the UK (founded in 1755), this show packs a punch with its traditional atmosphere. Expect to see champion ponies, local crafts, and a variety of trade stands. It is a fantastic family day out, offering a slightly more intimate feel than the Royal Welsh, but with all the passion for the countryside you would expect in the heart of the Brecon Beacons.
Underground Adventures at Dolaucothi Gold Mines
Dates: Open daily throughout July and August
Location: Pumsaint, SA19 8RR
Distance from SA20 0RU: 10 miles (Approx. 15-minute drive)
If the summer sun gets a little too warm, head underground for a fascinating history lesson. The Dolaucothi Gold Mines, managed by the National Trust, are the only known Roman gold mines in the UK. During the summer weeks, they run specialized 'Adit Tours' that take you deep into the hillside to see the hand-carved Roman workings and Victorian machinery. It is a unique way to spend an afternoon, and the surrounding woodland walks offer stunning views of the Cothi Valley.
Scenic Rail Journeys on the Heart of Wales Line
Dates: Daily departures
Location: Llandovery Station, SA20 0AW
Distance from SA20 0RU: 1.5 miles (Approx. 4-minute drive)
For a relaxing afternoon, we recommend taking a short trip on the Heart of Wales Line. In late July, the scenery is at its most lush. You can board the train at Llandovery and head north across the spectacular Cynghordy Viaduct. We suggest hopping off at the remote station of Sugar Loaf for a brisk hill walk, or continuing to the spa town of Llanwrtyd Wells for a local lunch before catching the return train back to Llandovery. It is one of the most beautiful railway journeys in Britain and starts right on your doorstep.
