Welcome to Brecon Oak. As the Welsh landscape transforms into its lush, early summer vibrant green, our corner of Carmarthenshire comes alive with some of the UK’s most iconic and unique events. Whether you are looking for world-class literature, high-octane rural competition, or the finest local produce, there is something happening just a short drive from your luxury base in Llandovery.

Here are four unmissable activities and events taking place over the coming weeks.

1. The Hay Festival 2026

Dates: 21 – 31 May 2026
Location: Hay-on-Wye, HR3 5AD
Distance from SA20 0RU: 25 miles (Approx. 50-minute drive)

Known as the "Woodstock of the Mind," the Hay Festival is a global literary phenomenon. For eleven days, the "Town of Books" hosts the world's greatest writers, thinkers, and performers. While the main stage talks often feature household names and Nobel laureates, the festival is also fantastic for families, with a dedicated programme for children and a bustling festival site filled with local crafts and artisan food stalls. It is a scenic drive through the northern Brecon Beacons to get there, making for a perfect day trip.

2. Llandovery Farmers’ Market

Date: Saturday, 6 June 2026 (10:00 – 14:00)
Location: Market Square, Llandovery, SA20 0AA
Distance from SA20 0RU: < 1 mile (2-minute drive or a short stroll)

For a true taste of the Towy Valley, head into the heart of town for the monthly Farmers’ Market. This is the best place to stock the kitchen at Brecon Oak with premium ingredients. The market focuses on produce grown, reared, or processed within 25 miles of Llandovery. Expect to find locally produced sheep's cheese, organic meats, fresh cider, and home-baked Welsh cakes. It’s a wonderful way to meet the producers and enjoy the local community atmosphere right on your doorstep.

3. The Whole Earth Man v Horse Marathon

Date: Saturday, 13 June 2026
Location: Llanwrtyd Wells, LD5 4RW
Distance from SA20 0RU: 12 miles (Approx. 20-minute drive)

One of the most eccentric and legendary events in the Welsh sporting calendar, the Man v Horse Marathon began as a pub bet in 1980. This 22-mile cross-country race sees hundreds of runners attempt to outpace a field of horses and riders over rugged terrain. The atmosphere in nearby Llanwrtyd Wells is electric, with spectators lining the square to see the start and finish. Even if you aren't running, it is a spectacular event to watch, showcasing the incredible grit and spirit of the Mid-Wales community.

4. Royal Welsh Smallholding and Countryside Festival

Dates: 16 – 17 May 2026
Location: Royal Welsh Showground, Builth Wells, LD2 3SY
Distance from SA20 0RU: 15 miles (Approx. 25-minute drive)

If you have a passion for rural life, this festival is a must. Unlike the massive Royal Welsh Show in July, the Spring Festival is more intimate and focused on small-scale farming, gardening, and sustainable living. You can enjoy livestock displays, dog shows, and a massive food hall featuring some of the best Welsh delicacies. It’s a great day out for those who want to experience the traditional skills of the Welsh countryside in a relaxed, family-friendly setting.
