1. The Hay Festival 2026

Known globally as the "Woodstock of the Mind," the Hay Festival is a must-visit for anyone staying in the region during late May. Bringing together the world’s greatest writers, thinkers, and entertainers, the festival offers a packed programme of talks, workshops, and musical performances. Even if you haven't booked tickets for a specific headline speaker, the atmosphere in the town of books is electric, with pop-up cafes, independent bookshops, and artisan stalls to explore.
2. Llandovery Farmers' Market
Dates: Saturday 30th May & Saturday 27th June 2026
Location: Market Square, Llandovery, SA20 0AA
Distance from Brecon Oak: 0.8 miles (approx. 3-minute drive or a pleasant 15-minute walk)
For a true taste of the Towy Valley, head into the heart of Llandovery for the monthly farmers' market. This is the perfect opportunity to stock the kitchen at Brecon Oak with premium local ingredients. Expect to find award-winning Welsh cheeses, organic meats, locally baked sourdough, and seasonal preserves. It is a fantastic way to meet the producers and enjoy the community spirit of our historic market town.
3. Spring Foraging and Nature Walks at Dinefwr
Date: Sunday 14th June 2026
Location: Dinefwr Park and Castle, Llandeilo, SA19 6RT
Distance from Brecon Oak: 13 miles (approx. 22-minute drive)
The National Trust estate at Dinefwr is spectacular in June. This year, they are hosting a special "Spring Bounty" foraging walk led by local naturalists. You will explore the ancient parkland, learn to identify edible wild plants, and perhaps catch a glimpse of the famous White Park Cattle. The estate also features a stunning 12th-century Welsh castle and a 17th-century manor house, making it a perfect day trip for history and nature lovers alike.
4. Red Kite Feeding at Llanddeusant
Dates: Daily (Spring/Summer feeding usually at 15:00)
Location: Red Kite Centre, Llanddeusant, SA19 9YG
Distance from Brecon Oak: 8 miles (approx. 18-minute drive)
While this happens daily, the activity in May and June is particularly special as the birds are active and the chicks are often beginning to hatch in nearby nests. Located just a short drive from Brecon Oak, the Llanddeusant feeding station allows you to witness dozens of these majestic birds of prey diving for food against the backdrop of the Black Mountain. It is a world-class wildlife spectacle that remains one of the area's best-kept secrets.
