Conquer the Mountain: The Fan Dance 2026

If you are seeking the ultimate physical challenge during your luxury stay in Wales, look no further than the legendary Fan Dance. Set in the breathtaking landscape of the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park, this world-famous 24-kilometre route is an authentic Special Forces selection test. Whether you are aiming to push your absolute limits on the mountain or simply want to witness one of the toughest endurance events in the world, the Summer Edition of the Fan Dance is an unmissable spectacle.

For competitors and their support crews alike, staying at Brecon Oak in Llandovery provides the perfect balance of pre-race preparation and post-race luxury.

Essential Details

  • Date: Saturday, 4 July 2026 (Summer Edition)
  • Location: Pont ar Daf Car Park / The Storey Arms, Brecon (LD3 8NL)
  • Distance from Brecon Oak: 25 miles (Approximately a 40-minute scenic drive from SA20 0RU)

The Ultimate Test of Endurance

The Fan Dance is deeply ingrained in British military history. For over fifty years, it has formed the first major hurdle of SAS and SBS selection. The gruelling 24-kilometre route forces candidates to ascend Pen y Fan—the highest peak in South Wales at 2,907 feet—not just once, but twice.

Participants can choose to tackle the course in one of two ways:

  • Loadbearing: The authentic military experience. Competitors must "tab" (a fast-paced tactical march) the entire route while carrying a heavy 35lb bergen (backpack), plus their food and water.
  • Clean Fatigue: For trail runners and civilian athletes, this category allows you to tackle the mountain carrying only the bare essential safety equipment, testing pure speed and stamina over the brutal terrain.

The return leg features the infamous "Jacob's Ladder", an incredibly steep, punishing ascent back up Pen y Fan that will test the physical and mental resolve of every single entrant.

Spectating and Family Fun

While the race itself is an extreme endurance event designed for hardened athletes, the atmosphere on race day makes it a fantastic, inspiring outing for the whole family.

  • Cheer on the Athletes: The camaraderie at the start and finish lines is absolutely electric. Families can safely gather near the Storey Arms to cheer on the runners and loadbearers as they cross the finish line, exhausted but incredibly proud, to receive their custom medals.
  • Enjoy the Scenery: The lower trails surrounding the base camp are beautiful and highly accessible. Families can enjoy a relaxed, much gentler hike, taking in the spectacular summer views of the National Park while the athletes battle the peaks above.
  • Base Camp Atmosphere: The event base camp is buzzing with energy, featuring hot food vendors, warm drinks, and a wonderful sense of community support that highlights the welcoming spirit of the Welsh valleys.
