Trail Running & Ultras
Beyond the military marches, our valleys host a vibrant trail running scene. From fast woodland 10ks to 50km ultra-marathons, the landscape offers it all.
The Trailhead Get Jerky Devil's Staircase Ultra
- Date: October 3, 2026.
- The Challenge: A 50km (31-mile) ultra-marathon taking in the remote wilderness of Soar y Mynydd (the most remote chapel in Wales) and Llyn Brianne.
- The Name: It is named after the Devil's Staircase—a set of tortuous paved hairpin bends with a 25% gradient. It is a severe physical test, but largely on non-technical ground, making it a great "first ultra" for road runners.
The Red Kite Challenge
- Date: April 2026.
- Location: Devil's Bridge (50 mins drive).
- The Terrain: Unlike the open moorland, this race takes place on steep woodland trails. It is fast, flowy, and often serves as a championship race for Welsh athletics.
The Real Ale Wobble (Cycling)
- Date: Mid-November 2026.
- The Twist: Technically a mountain bike event, this is a non-competitive ride held during the Mid Wales Beer Festival. Instead of energy gels, the aid stations serve locally brewed real ale. Expect mud, roots, and a very convivial atmosphere!
