Gastronomy: A Taste of the Tywi Valley
Our region punches well above its weight for food. Whether you want a hearty breakfast before a hike or a romantic dinner, here are our top local recommendations.
Casual & Traditional (Llandovery)
- The West End Cafe: A cultural institution. Known across the UK as a biker cafe, it serves massive portions of traditional food. Try the "faggots and peas" or an all-day breakfast. It is unpretentious, loud, and welcoming.
- The Castle Hotel: A solid choice for pub food with a roaring fire in winter, offering the traditional coaching inn experience.
- The Bear Inn: Located on the market square, this is a lively spot often serving curry nights and hearty steaks.
Destination Dining (Worth the Drive)
- Y Polyn (Nantgaredig - 25 mins): This gastro-pub is legendary. It rejects small, fancy portions in favour of generosity and flavour. Expect Salt Meadow Lamb, Welsh beef, and incredible sticky toffee pudding. Booking is essential.
- Wright's Food Emporium (Llanarthne - 30 mins): A "foodie mecca" near the Botanic Garden. It feels like a slice of a trendy city market transplanted to rural Wales. Their pork belly cubanos are famous.
- The Plough (Rhosmaen): Just outside Llandeilo, this hotel offers AA Rosette dining in a smart setting. It is an excellent choice for a traditional Sunday lunch.
