Myddfai: A Village of Magic and Medicine

Myddfai Landscape

Just three miles south of Llandovery (a 10-minute drive) lies the small village of Myddfai. While it may look like a quiet hamlet, it holds a place of global significance in the history of medicine and folklore.

The Legend

Myddfai was home to a dynasty of herbalists known as the "Physicians of Myddfai," who practised here from the 13th century. According to legend, their deep medical knowledge was gifted to them by the Lady of the Lake at Llyn y Fan Fach. She married a local farmer on the condition that he would not strike her three times. When the condition was broken, she returned to the lake, leaving her sons with the secrets of herbal healing.
